Wooden Boat Saviors

Wooden boat saviors Josh Herman, Elliot Peper and Sam Sowyrda are currently restoring the Ventura, a 70-foot-long Herreshoff Class Yacht with gorgeous features like a solid mahogany hull, decks made of Indian teak and an American spruce mast. Launched in 1920 as a private duck hunting yacht for rich philanthropist George Baker, it’s now owned by #SailNewYork for Manhattan forays. Herman, a well-known shipwright, has focused his efforts on several wood boats locally and Ventura’s story involves local collaborations. Restoration work is being performed at Frank M. Weeks Yacht Yard in Patchogue with efforts at Shellfish Marine and the Long Island Maritime Museum in West Sayville.
